Russian Academy of Sciences Murmansk Marine Biological Institute ж т р ш да THE H I STORY AND PRESENT TIME In 1992, in M urm ansk on the basis o f MMBI the first in the N orth o f Russia oceanarium was opened. It is a m odem scientific and cognitive com plex as well as a scientific and experim ental base for the work o f national and foreign specialists in the field o f physiology, ethology and zoo-psychology o f marine animals. In 1998, the D epartm ent o f O ceanography and Biology o f the southern seas o f R us­ sia (Rostov-on-D on) was es­ tablished, reorganized into the A zov Branch o f MMB I in 2001. N ow adays the Institute o f M a­ rine Ecosystem Investigations is being formed on the basis o f the MMBI A zov Branch, Kola Scientific Center and South Scientific Center o f the Russian A cadem y o f Sciences. MM B I’s experience in com plex m arine research in the Arctic has enabled EIAs (Envi­ ronm ental Impact Assessm ent) projects for oil and gas pros­ pecting and extraction on the Arctic shelf to be carried out. This w ork has given good opportunities for coopera­ tion with Gazprom, Rosshelf, Lukoil and other Russian oil companies. During the tw o last decades, the Institute has been actively participating in realization o f Special Federal Research Program s on the study o f the World O cean’s environment. M M B I’s scientific activities are not focused only on expeditionary and lab research. It includes num erous re­ gional, all-Russian, and international conferences that are organized by the Institute. M eetings o f scientists stimulate coordination o f the activities to studies o f the shelf seas. MMBI closely cooperates w ith the higher education. O n the initiative o f MMBI, several departm ents were es­ tablished at M urm ansk State Technical University, and M urm ansk State Pedagogical University. Conferences o f students and young scientists have already becom e a tradition at MMBI. Students and post-graduates from the largest higher educational institutions o f Russia have their practice on the scientific base o f the Institute in the settle­ ment o f Dalnie Zelentsy. M M B I’s scientific activities attract w ell-deserved attention o f the Russian A cadem y o f Sciences and the Governm ent o f the Russian Federation. The Institute was visited by Presidents o f the A cadem y o f Sciences o f the U SSR M.V. K eldysh (1966) and G.I. M archuk (1988) and by President o f R ussian A cadem y o f Sciences Yu.S. Osipov (2001). Накопленный МБС - ММБИ с 1935 г. опыт по организации комплексных исследований в Арктике послужил основой для разработки Институтом мор­ ских ОВОС при разведке и добыче нефти и газа на арктическом шельфе, от­ крыв широкие возможности сотрудничества с “Газпромом”, “Росшельфом”, “Севморнефтегазом”, нефтяной компанией “Лукойл” и др. В настоящее время Институт, продол­ жая экосистемный мониторинг морей Се­ верного Ледовитого океана, решает фун­ даментальные проблемы биоразнообразия, формирования биологической продуктив­ ности континентального шельфа, адапта­ ций животных и растений с учетом измене­ ний климата и антропогенных воздействий. ММБИ является координирующим центром в области биоэкологических ис­ следований, различных аспектов полярной марикультуры, природопользования и охра­ ны природной среды европейских морей России. На протяжении двух последних десятиле­ тий Институт активно участвует в реализации федеральных целевых научных программ по исследованию природы Мирового океана. Сегодня научная жизнь ММБИ протекает не только в экспедициях и лабо­ раториях. Она насыщена региональными, всероссийскими, международными конференциями, которые организует Институт. Встречи ученых помогают ко­ ординировать работы по изучению шельфовых морей России. ММБИ традиционно поддерживает тесные связи с высшей школой. По инициативе Института открыт ряд кафедр в Мурманских государственных тех­ ническом и педагогическом университетах. Регулярно проводятся школы по морской биологии, совместные конференции молодых ученых ММБИ и сту­ дентов. На научно-экспериментальной базе Института в пос.
