For the nearest future (up to 2000 ) the basis of the expedition plans of the Institute is the ecological monitoring of the seas and archipelagos in the West Arctic with the following aims: to investigate scales and mechanisms of the marine ecosystems replies to the global climatic changes (trends, adaptations, stability); to investigate the traces of the anthropogenic contamination dynamics in the marine environment, animals and plants, and to analyze cumulative effects (external advection of pollutants, local damping of chemical and radioactive wastes, oil-gas extraction on the shelf etc.); to carry out complex accounts of both traditional and non-traditional bioresources and the estimations of the strategy of their rational usage without any damage to the ecosystem's organisation of the marine basins (fauna, systematic, functioning); to estimate the actual biosphere status and the development of the recommendations for the establishing and maintaining specially protected zones of he marine areas, coastal areas, islands, archipelagos in the Arctic.
