Murmansk Marine Biological Institute (MMBI) of Kola Scientific Centre of Russia Academy of Sciences has been found in 1958 on the Murmansk Biological Station base. Until 1898, this station was situated on Solovetskye Isles in the White Sea. In 1898, it has been transfered to Aleksandrovsk (Polyarny, at present) on the Kola Bay coast it was carried to Dalnezelenskaja inlet in 1936. Well-know biologist, professor М. M. Kamshilov was the first director of MMBI. From 1981, the Institute is headed by professor G. G. Matishov. MMBI is a unique hydrobiological astablishment in the Russia Academy of Sciences beyond the Polar circle. Scientific activity of MMBI has rentered essential effect on the development of marine biology. Such new scientific schools as marine comparative physiology and marine paleoecology were born here. There are eight departaments, International Biological Station on the Franz-Joseph Land, marine aquarium, electronic microscope and computer studies, scientific library and 2 research vessels (’’Dalnie Zelentsy” and "Pomor” ) in the Institute. General fields of MMBI activity are ecology, productivity, biological resources, rational utilization and protection of the northern european seas nature. Scientific fields of scientific research include: — multidisciplinary investigations of ecosystem forming history in the northern seas, stydying of laws of bioproductive processes, life cycles and ecology of marine invertebrates and plants; — population ecology of marine birds and mammals in the arctic seas; — qualitative and quantitative characteristics of bioresources; — ecological monitoring for condition and dynamic of ecosystem in the northern seas; — elecudation of chemical and radio-active contaminations and its influence on the marine organisms; — investigations in different fields of the aquaculture. Also MMBI solves practical industrial tasks. MMBI serves as a base for research activities of scientists of universities, biological and medical institutes from other cities and for practical training of students. , I XCt I I Ю I III \y V \Jl., Dalnie Zelentsy of Murmansk Region, 184631, Russia.
